AQUARIUM HOUSE

HORIZONTAL ARCHITECTURE WITHOUT LIMITS

The house is located in a residential section of low population density in the Valencian metropolitan area, on the outskirts of the expanding urban limits of the town.

The project, developed in section, is comprised of four horizontal rectangular trays at different levels whose positioning fuses with the horizon and erases any appearance of limits that would separate the different floors.

Each of the levels corresponds with a series of functions that are interrelated.  Starting at the lower level, the series is as follows:  Storage / Day/ Night/ Leisure.  These spaces are defined by the floor and ceiling of each of the horizontal trays, but they present an irregular free plan adjusted to the necessities of each space and level.

All of the rooms are vertically enclosed by large windows that allow the unification of the exterior spaces with the limitless views from each level.  The continuity of the flooring between the interior and exterior spaces and the large picture windows reaching floor level give the feeling of the free flow of space.

The exterior spaces are a blend of covered and uncovered terraces, whose size varies depending on its function.  In addition, the ground floor incorporates the pool, connected to the house by a large window that illuminates the basement, and the main porch, covered by a large cantilever formed by the second tray.

The interior is structured according to the following order:  the Aquarium came first, and then the house arrived to accompany it.  The day zone is built around a precious aquarium containing tropical waters and a spectacular collection of fish and coral that is visible from three sides.  The rest of the house, open spaces, interrelated, with no fixed limits, with continuous porcelain flooring, white vertical panels and indirect illumination.

In summary, this project was born in response to the pre-established context and specific needs of its users.  The house is defined by sections that give rise to various levels corresponding to the functional program of the house while allowing each space to extend freely towards the horizon.
